Please tell me I’m wrong so I don’t end up spending $840 on peat moss.
I’m overseeding my 10,000 sq. ft. yard and want to cover it with 1/4" of peat moss. A calculator estimated I’d need 7.72 cubic yards, which is about 208 cubic feet. The peat moss I’m looking at is sold at Lowe’s in 3 cu. ft. compressed bales, which should expand to 6 cu. ft. Based on that, I’d need 35 bales at $24 each, totaling $840. I’m planning to use a Landzie peat/compost spreader. Does this sound right, or is there an error somewhere?
Why would you assume 3 cubic feet is 6 cubic feet? The bag literally says 3 cubic feet.
So yeah, your math is off. You’re looking at around $1,600. Plus, spreading peat moss over 10,000 sq. ft. seems like overkill. Just throw down extra seed, rake it in, and roll it. The birds won’t get all of it!
In my opinion, your yard is way too big to buy peat moss from a box store. It’s a lot more work than it seems, but hey, it’s your call.

I read online that compressed peat moss can expand to twice its size once loosened up. Plus, I kind of enjoy the challenge—yard work punishment doesn’t bother me!

Man, I feel you. Check out my last post. I installed my own irrigation system and spread 4 tons of sand/compost over the past couple of weeks. Why do we do this to ourselves?
Honestly, peat moss hasn’t made a big enough difference for me to keep using it. I used those same bags before, but this time, I didn’t bother.

Yeah, there’s definitely a strong anti-peat moss vibe here, and that’s what we’re poking fun at. If you look around, you’ll see it’s been a pretty hot topic lately, lol.

It’s not even about hate, it’s more like trying to educate. The backlash against peat moss just got really big, really fast. The bot went from making a few comments per day to about 25-30 a day overnight.
Turns out, it was mostly trolls fueling it—people who rarely comment or weren’t even subbed here, plus a lot of new and alternate accounts.
Honestly, about 9 out of 10 times when the bot triggers now, it’s because people are either trolling or talking about the whole fiasco, not even peat moss itself.
