Peat Moss Calculation for Overseed Project

Box stores are mostly scams unless you need just a couple of bags—then you’re just paying for convenience. Look for a landscape supply nearby instead. I still don’t get why you’d want to spend so much on peat moss though.

Without getting into the whole peat moss debate, I’ll just say I’ve got a yard about the same size and used peat moss as a seed cover before.

Twenty compressed 3-cubic-foot bales spread with a Landzie spreader was enough for me.

Peat moss is a good soil amendment but a poor choice for seed cover. It can cause long-term issues that alternatives don’t.

Just use loam or slit seed into the soil—no need for peat moss. I skipped it since it was expensive and just used loam instead. For smaller spots, I used a garden weasel to till the seeds in, and I had a much higher germination rate that way.

I used a mix of peat moss and Scott’s garden soil. My yard is around 3,000 sq. ft., and I used only three bags of peat moss, but I used eight bags of garden soil (could have used ten). Next time, I think I’ll skip the peat moss and just use garden soil—it was cheaper and worked well.

I just renovated 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn. Put down 2 inches of new topsoil, applied Tenacity, spread starter fertilizer, and seeded with JG Black Beauty Ultra. I rented a roller from Home Depot to press the seed into the soil a bit. It’s coming in perfectly, no peat moss needed.

I used five of those peat moss cubes for my 5,500 sq. ft. yard. Just a single pass with the Landzie spreader, not 1/4 inch coverage, but enough to keep the seeds happy. You might want to start with ten bags and see how it goes.
