New Sod Should I Worry About Browning

Laid New Sod a Week Ago – Should I Be Concerned About the Brown Spots?

You need to water the sod a lot for 2 weeks. At least 3 times a day minimum. Assuming your landscaper prepped the ground first

Hey everyone, this is my first time laying sod and we had a landscaper come out to install it about a week ago. We’ve been watering once in the morning and once in the evening, but we still have some brown patches here and there. Is this normal or do we need to water more? Thanks in advance for any advice from those with more experience

More water for sure, double it until you see it greening up

He did

@Zephyr
You haven’t been watering enough, sod is very thirsty

@Zephyr
More water. It’s likely getting too dry during the day when the sun is out

@Zephyr
Mine did this too (even browner) but once it established roots it greened up and looks perfect now

@Zephyr
More water, my friend. All is not lost yet, start doubling your duration and add a third session until it turns deep green

@Zephyr
3-4 times per day for a few weeks. Lots of water

@Zephyr
When my sod was first installed I was told to water it 2 times a day for at least 15 minutes each time. It needs a lot of water when it’s first installed

@Zephyr
Check the bottom of the sod by pulling a section back and see if it’s soggy. We had our sprinklers set to 3 times per day for 20 minutes, and ours started to brown from oversaturation. We could sink our feet into it. It could be the opposite and need more water. You need to check first

@Zephyr
It may need water but could also have fungus. If it’s St. Augustine, it will have brown patches and circles which are a real pain to manage. If it’s fungus, there’s a spray for it. Hopefully, it’s just a water and time issue. Good luck

@Zephyr
Putting a tuna can down will help you measure water. You need to run the oscillating sprinkler for a minimum of one hour a day to get an inch. Some say 2 inches for the first week

The hidden cost of new sod is weeks of watering

@Zephyr
You need to water 2-3 times as much as that. Sorry, not sorry. I’m just here to tell you why your grass is dying

Time for round 2 of sod

Big shout out to everyone who gave feedback. Thank you all so much! I’ve been reading through all the comments. May your lawns be as green as emeralds

Damn that looks good. I should have mentioned I’m in the Atlanta area. It’s been in the 80s and sunny the last few days since the sod was laid. Thanks for the pictures and feedback everyone!

Yeah, definitely water more if you’re in Atlanta

Also, I haven’t had great experiences with those types of sprinklers. They don’t provide good coverage

Might want to check out one like this instead.
