The wheels aren’t the problem
That still doesn’t solve the issue of the fertilizer hitting the wheels instead of being flung outward. I believe walking faster will spin the impeller faster, thus flinging the fertilizer upward and over the wheels into the yard where it belongs. At least it seems to work for my old Scotts spreader.
@Toby
Yes, walking faster solves it.

Amazing how this is still the design after so many years.

They fixed the issue with their elite line. I have one, and the disks are set above the wheels.
@Toby
I agree. You have to move quickly. But having the guards wouldn’t hurt. I have some thin plastic sheet laying around to try.
I have this same spreader. It was basically my first spreader. Since they cost more than I prefer to spend, I haven’t upgraded yet. I had no idea this was an issue until I found this forum. Honestly, I haven’t really encountered a noticeable problem with the design.

Same here.
I can see the issue and have even watched the demo of this same one. It’s flawed for sure. Makes me wonder if I’m doing something wrong and too stupid to notice any detrimental results.
@Morgan
This is exactly how I feel. Is my incompetence masking the flaw, or am I too incompetent to notice?

Dilemma… I have always assumed I suck at properly fertilizing. The math, well, I already admitted to being dumb, never works. My lawn? Not too shabby. It could be so much better if I were more knowledgeable. The OP is a genius in my eyes. I never would have come up with this idea.
@Morgan
I dunno. My turf is dark green, and it’s even.
So…

Yeah, maybe we are just lucky?? I have had this one for years. Maybe it got worse over time and is more of an issue than the earlier ones.
@Morgan
Yeah, or slow walking. Small lawns make it hard to get into a momentum/stride maybe?

I have a smaller lawn, 1k sq ft front and 1k back. I do move at a decent pace. Hell man, who knows.
@Morgan
Yeah, I just feel bad. I feel like I got a great value on that little spreader while all of Reddit completely trashes it.
I genuinely don’t have a problem with that spreader.
Walk faster?
Instead of edge guards, they need wheel guards.
I went with expanding spray foam; it has worked wonders. No more stripes!
