What’s loam?

Loam soil is a mix of sand, silt, and clay. It holds nutrients and water well for plant roots but also drains properly so the plants don’t rot. More info here.
@Keller
So if I put that in some areas where nothing’s growing, you think it’ll help?

It definitely wouldn’t hurt. Try to find ‘super loam,’ which is loam with compost mixed in. I’d also suggest renting an aerator and doing the whole lawn first.
@Keller
Here’s my situation: Crabgrass took over some areas, so I used quinclorac in early August. It worked and got rid of the crabgrass and broadleaf weeds. I then dethatched the yard, which left it patchy, but exposed the soil. After scarifying and loosening it up, I seeded on 9/19. We noticed the ground was still really hard, so we aerated and seeded again a week later with starter fertilizer. The weather has been mostly cloudy, but soil temps are 60-70°F. Still no germination after 8 days. I’m in Long Island, NY. Lots of water now, just waiting to see what happens.
@Keller
I’m not too hopeful, but I’ll let it go another week or two. Loam sounds perfect—compost could improve the existing soil. I’ve kept it watered 3-4 times a day with in-ground sprinklers, so maybe top-dressing will help.

@Keller
My yard looks just like your first pic—patchy but not enough to start over completely.
@Keller
Forgot to mention I also aerated on day one.
