The dead grass just scrapes off. I’m in Colorado hardiness zone 5b.
Raccoons or skunks grub hunting would be my guess. I have the same issue in my lawn; mine are raccoons. My girlfriend took a picture to show me.

To get rid of the grubs, depleting their food source will force them elsewhere to eat.

I’ve learned the hard way that grub treatment is part of my annual plan. I do 4 applications of fertilizer and use Grubex in the mid-summer.

Good luck killing the grubs. Most parts of Colorado have strict chemical laws, and it’s hard to find products that work. It might be better to focus on repairing for now and prevention going forward.

Look for carbaryl or trichlorfon. There are several products out there that use either of those as their active ingredient.
