What Kind of Grass Is This?

We had some trees removed next to our driveway, and now there’s no shade in the hot Virginia sun. About 9 months ago, I planted what I think was Scott’s Sunny Mix (but I’m not sure). The grass is ugly, prickly, and doesn’t match the fescue in the rest of the yard. Can anyone help me identify it?

I know it’s probably my fault for not researching more before planting, but my kids also hate walking on it when they play outside. So, I’m thinking of completely redoing it. Any suggestions for what to plant instead?

It’s not Bermuda grass. I’ve deleted comments that incorrectly identify it as Bermuda or centipede. We need a better look at the ligules and clearer pictures of the leaves to classify it correctly, probably nimblewill.

This comment is empty, admin should fix.

Maybe nimblewill.

Had never heard of this. I think what I have looks most like nimblewill vs. Bermuda. Either way, it needs to go!

I’m leaning toward nimblewill as well. To get rid of it, you could use Tenacity (active ingredient: mesotrione). Just be aware that it may bleach other grass blades it doesn’t kill.

@Case
Is this as difficult to get rid of as Bermuda? I felt prepared to deal harshly after hearing the commentary about Bermuda weed.

Favoring nimblewill as well. Check for a ligule for a positive ID. That’s your best bet! If you’re reseeding, glyphosate could be easier. Given the temperatures, it might not be the right time to address this just yet.

@Montana
I’m planning to nuke it late summer and start fresh since there’s no other turf.

Tenacity is what works on it. I had to cover it for about 6 weeks in the summer after digging out what I could.

It’s dried out.

It’s almost December and has been in the 30s at night. It is dormant.

I don’t know what it is, but that’s definitely not Bermuda grass.
