Not perfect but not bad

We have come a long way. Still a long way to go. No sprinklers.

The submissions are in for the 2024 Lawn of the Year contest!

Pretty perfect, great lines

Toro 50 inch zero turn. Cut at 5 inches. Stripes look good.

You cut at 5 inches? What are you growing to cut that high? I’m a pretty wide blend and once it’s over about 4.5 it doesn’t stand back up as well, but then again I have more shade than this.

@Hadley
It’s not matted either. I think I have some close shots.

@Hadley
It’s tall fescue but I also overseed with rye. I like the darker color. It’s honestly like 4.5 inches. But I cut it at 3 in the fall and use a lawn sweep for the extra clippings and leaves.

Looks great. I cut at about 3.75 inches. I’d rather do about 4.5 but my fine fescues have a tough time even with what I’m doing already. Especially on borders where I always have to drive the mower with the rock or tree on the left.

@Hadley
Definitely not easy. I try to be efficient so I’m not cutting grass all day. But I do enjoy the process. Obstacles are never easy. Slowly I am moving boulders and removing stumps so it’s as easy to cut as possible.

I like it. Good job.

No sprinklers? What do you do?

Cut as high as I can and pray lol. Yard is too big for sprinklers. But every now and then I set up a hose with a sprinkler but not enough pressure to reach the far areas. Also, I limit the amount of nitrogen I put down so it doesn’t explode with top growth. I use PGR 2 times a season to help keep the length in check. I use a few other products but all in liquid form with a 30-gallon tow sprayer.

Let’s trade! Our yard is on life support here in hot Texas.

What’s your water bill like? Maybe some drought defender and a liquid aerator so the soil can absorb more water? Definitely not easy.

@Nash
That’s just mandatory for survival in general. I haven’t seen rain since mid-July in central Texas and still mid-90s (but the upper 60s in the mornings are nice!). 2 times a week watering restrictions are manageable for 4,500 sqft of lawn though. (I’ve comfortably stayed under 10k gallons every month so far).

Just checked precip estimates and we’ve had an inch of rain somewhere in there, but that’s not much for almost the last 3 months (we average 30 to 35 inches of rain a year, problem is it’s perennial drought punctuated by flood).

@Aspen
Wild stuff man. Wow. What type of grass do you have?

If that’s not perfect, I wonder what is.
