No germination yet. Is it normal?

I killed all my lawn with Roundup two weeks ago. After that, I cut the grass very low and did aeration and seeding five days ago, but I haven’t seen any sprouts yet. Should I be worried? Is it normal for some seeds to still be on top of the soil? What did I do wrong? Please advise. By the way, I’m watering twice a day.

What zone? Watering twice with nothing to retain the water won’t do much for germination.

Concord NC. Temp are between 60 and 75 now. What do you mean by that?

Seeds won’t germinate if the soil isn’t moist. People use peat moss or recycled paper to help keep moisture in the ground and the seeds from drying out.

@Darin
Peat moss is a good soil amendment but a poor choice for seed cover. It causes long term issues that alternatives don’t.

To be honest it looks like it’s always to be moist. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong :cry: I tried to water around 11-12pm and then in the afternoon around 4-5pm. 20 mins per spot.

I’d split it to three times a day. 0600ish, 1100ish, and 1600ish. Water for 10-15 minutes each time.

@Darin
I unfortunately don’t have an irrigation system so I have to manually put the sprinklers. I leave around 6 from work and I’m usually back around 12. On the weekend I will be able to do that though.

@Jamie
Amazon sells water timers. Could be easy workaround.

Yeah, the problem is that I didn’t link all the sprinklers, so I’m manually moving around the sprinklers to cover all the areas :sweat_smile:.

I agree with the other commenter. Twice a day isn’t much. I watered 4 times a day for 7-8 minutes when I did my full Reno. What type of grass is it? TTTF comes in around day 7. 14-21 days for KBG. Rye is way quicker, around 3 days.

@Soren
It’s tall fescue. I water 15-20 mins per time.

@Soren
So considering I’m using TTTF, I shouldn’t worry about the fact that it didn’t germinate after 5 days? (I only see very few spots where there’s some small germination). The thing that is worrying me is the fact that I still see some seeds on top. Is it still normal?

@Jamie
Yes, adjust your watering time from 2x to 3x a day. Just sit back and relax; it takes time.

Ok, so no issues with the seeds on top of the soil after 5 days?

No. Just give it time. You may wake up one day to crazy germination. Patience is key.

@Whitney
I really hope so :smiley:.

Took mine a full 10 days to do anything; 5 days is way too soon.

Don’t know what brand fescue you used, just want to say the Rebel fescue this year is bad. I bought a 20 lbs bag, would say only about 1/2 looked okay after 3 weeks.
