Keeping Rabbits and Squirrels Away from New Grass

Has anyone had issues with rabbits eating new grass or squirrels digging it up? I’m looking for non-harmful ways to keep them away. I put a lot of time into planting this fall, and now these animals are causing problems. Any advice?

I have a newly seeded lawn and spent a lot of time and effort on it.

I had the same issue. I made a “squirrel box,” which is a non-lethal trap. On the first day, I caught two squirrels and moved them to a park that’s not too far but not too close.

Building the trap took some time, but it was totally worth it.

The grass looks great! How many days has it been since you seeded?

How about a neighbor who feeds 4 squirrels every day. All seasons outside winter. Ugh. Bless her heart.

I’m new to this too, so no worries! What do you do about the bare spots now? Do you just reseed them and hope mowing doesn’t mess up their growth? Or will mowing actually help those spots fill in? I’m dealing with the same thing with squirrels.

I just walk around the yard and sprinkle seed in the bare spots. It doesn’t take much time. This usually happens during the season when I’m already working on the lawn, so the sprinklers are set to germinate mode anyway.

I swear that slugs and worms eat all my seed. At least yours got to germinate.

Squirrels are busy hiding acorns right now, and they’re doing the same thing in my freshly aerated, regularly watered lawn, which is super soft and squishy .
