I’m new to zone 7b. I never had to water my lawn before I moved here. Our lawn was nice and green until two weeks ago. We went on vacation, and one day the lawn mower guy cut the grass. Now, the grass looks really brown. None of our neighbors’ lawns look as brown as ours.
Is it going dormant for cooler weather? Or is it dying? I watered it today.
What type of grass do you have? If it’s a warm-season grass, then yes it’s going dormant. Your neighbors might have cool-season grasses that are doing well in the cooler temperatures.
I imagine many here are middle-aged, didn’t you all pay attention to what grass does in different seasons? The grass is going dormant, especially if you’re not getting much rain right now.

My guess is you have common Bermuda. Can you take a close-up picture of the blades?
In zone 7b? LOL
Yeah, I’m in Piedmont. It’s 7b. Most of the yards around me are Bermuda. I tried to grow a fescue lawn, but it died. With well irrigation, I let Bermuda take over, and I overseed with annual rye, clover, and perennial rye that dies out in spring and comes back in fall.

More than likely, your grass is going dormant, not dead. If you have warmer climate grasses and have had cool or cold overnight temperatures lately, that will cause the warm-season grasses to start going dormant. When they do, they tend to brown out.

It could be dormancy from lack of sun or being too dried out from summer damage. You probably won’t see it green again until spring if this is warm-season grass. Make sure to get your preemergent down ASAP!
