How much watering is too much

I just did an overseed and I’m really into watering. We got about half an inch of rain on Saturday and since then it’s been gloomy and cloudy, so the soil hasn’t dried much. Watering for 5 minutes seems to keep it moist throughout the day, but last week I had to water for 5-8 minutes twice a day or it would dry out. What’s the right amount?

Following. I’ve been doing Ryan Knorr’s suggestion of watering for 15-20 minutes around 11 am and 6 pm, but it feels like too much.

It really depends on how much shade you have. Or how cloudy it is. If you think it’s too much, it probably is. Once I see water pooling, I usually stop and let it absorb, then I water again if I feel it’s needed. My backyard is full sun, and my front yard is partly sunny. In the back, I could probably sprinkle every hour when it’s sunny and it might still not be enough. For the front, watering twice a day works according to Ryan’s suggestion, but I do mine at 8:30 am because of water restrictions.

6? Why? Wouldn’t that increase the chances of fungus?

It’s hard to water too often. I seeded in August during 95 degree days, so I watered 3-4 times a day for 15 minutes. All of my seed grew very well.

Good to know. Thanks.

It’s probably easier to underwater than to overwater. Unless you see puddles forming that could drown the seed, you’re probably fine.

Hey! If you need info about overseeding a cool season lawn, you can check out this comprehensive guide in this post here.

I overseeded this weekend and shortly after read about pre-germinating, so that makes me feel a lot better about not over-watering.
