Fall overseeding results

In the Northeast (zone 6a), I scalped and dethatched the lawn in mid-August. Afterward, I overseeded it with Kentucky Bluegrass blends, specifically Sure Shot and 365ss. I’ve kept the mower blade height set at 2 inches and have been mowing twice a week for the last three months to encourage the grass to grow thicker. And yes, I know I need to sharpen my mower blade

Looks good! I think it’s time to sharpen your mower blades tho.

Do you ever wonder if people skipped the seed and just took care of their lawns in the fall (like half as much care if you were overseeding) if they would get similar results?

I did that this year and it looks similar, yeah, just nitrogen & water.

Sure, but your turf has a lifespan and will decline year over year without seeding unless you don’t have a bunch-type turf. Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede, etc. Basically, the summer turfs or if you’re in a northern region and can manage spreading cool season grasses. Basically, it only works if you have a turf type that spreads on its own and doesn’t require seeding.

We hate u. That’s awesome. Good work.

Thanks, appreciate the kind words.

I hope to do the same!

Looking forward to seeing the results!

WARNING to those in the northern hemisphere: The window for SAFE seeding in all but the most southern cool season zones (SW U.S.) has now closed. The next recommended window is dormant seeding, when soil temps are too low for grass seed to germinate (under 50F/10C but before the ground is frozen).

Regardless, if you are looking for information about how to overseed a cool season lawn? You can find a comprehensive guide in this post here.

Why 2” for KBG - seems low, no?

Active kiddos on the yard, that is why I also picked blends that are good turf grasses.

You can go pretty low with KBG, one of the reasons I overseed with it too.
