Cutting the lawn and dealing with straw net, need advice

We moved into a new house, and they seeded the backyard in late September. They put down a straw mat held in place with lawn staples. They said it would biodegrade, but from what I’ve read online, it might take years to fully break down. Since we have a toddler, I’m worried they might step on one of the staples, so I’m thinking about cutting the net and pulling it up.

Is that a good idea, or should I just leave it? Also, should I remove it now or wait until spring? The grass is currently 3-6 inches tall.

I learned the hard way… those nets don’t break down on their own. If you don’t pull them out when the grass starts growing, you’ll end up pulling up your lawn along with the nets. Next time, just use regular straw and keep it watered. I had a similar issue with a slope, spent more, and it actually slowed down the seed growth. Some better nets are out there, but they cost way more and are only really needed for big erosion problems. I’d recommend pulling it up now if you can, before too much grass gets tangled.

I think that’s what I’m going to do tomorrow. I want to put down more seed, but it might be too late in the season.

If you’re in a cooler area, just cover it after seeding and let it go dormant over winter.

Can you explain more about the stronger nets you’d use? We’ve got a steep slope with erosion issues.

You’ve got two options: pull the net out now or wait, but if you keep it, you’ll always have to mow on the second-highest setting.

If you don’t remove it, it’s just going to wrap around your mower blades.

Those nets don’t break down, and they’ll cause problems with your mower for years.

I used them on a hillside about 4 years ago, and they’re still there.

I prefer using peat moss instead of straw. The last time I used straw, it didn’t turn out well for me.

Still my go-to method.

Peat moss can be great for soil but it’s not the best for covering seeds. It causes long-term issues other options don’t.

It’s best to pull them up and then add more seed. Try putting down an 18-24-12 fertilizer.

That sounds like the right plan. I guess I’ll be pulling them up tomorrow. Is it too late to seed again?

I’ve used straw blankets and never had a problem. I wait until the grass is strong enough to pull on without it coming out, which is usually when it’s around 2 inches tall.

Next time, try pre-germinating your seeds and mixing with peat moss before spreading them out.
