A couple of months ago, AT&T came by and installed a box (marked with a red arrow) and buried the cable (inside the area circled in red). I’ve always maintained a nice yard, but after the installation, weeds started appearing exactly where they buried the line about 4 inches underground. What could be causing these weeds to show up all of a sudden?
I would guess that they dug up dormant seeds that were buried and brought them to the surface.

Interesting thought. I assume just pulling them out with the roots should help, and everything will return to normal?
@Vinnie
You might need to pull them out a couple of times, but that’s what I would do.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll keep an eye on it. I’m about to start my nitrogen treatment, so I suspect they’ll be back soon.

That could be it. If not exactly that, then maybe it’s a mix of tilling the soil and animals sitting on the fence spreading seeds.
@Timber
That’s funny you mention that. I read your earlier comment and got what you meant. I just went back outside a few minutes ago and noticed a couple of birds on the fence.
They mixed the soil up, so nutrients and seeds got blended into the new, airy soil.
Seeds lead to weeds.
The seeds won’t sprout when they’re too deep, but once the soil is turned over, they can sprout quickly. I’ve had many customers upset, thinking it was bad straw or poor seed because of things like this. Just spray the weeds and put down pre-emergent treatment in the spring and you’ll be fine.
