I was really upset when my lawn almost completely fell apart after a big heatwave in June. It was too late to save it during the long heatwave, so I decided to wait until September. On September 9th, I rented a slit seeder and got to work. I overseeded with tall fescue, added some basic fertilizer, and a bit of lime. My water bill tripled, but it worked out…
Let’s hope we don’t get another awful heat wave next year so this new grass can fully establish. I had to redo my front lawn for the second time this year.

I’m praying for that

Do heat waves matter if we can irrigate? Other than the extra water cost?
@Morgan
Not really, but depending on the size of your lawn, it isn’t realistic to water the whole thing during a heatwave. My backyard is 24k and my front yard is 17k. I don’t have any irrigation set up for the back and can’t truly reach every square foot of my front yard. I love my large yard, but when it comes to watering, I’m jealous of people with their 2k yards.
I’m on a well, so water is free for me, luckily.
Amazing job! Be proud of what you’ve done.

Very impressive. What height do you mow at?

For the first mow, I did the highest setting on my mower at 4 inches. It rained for about a week and a half before I cut it, so it got a bit out of control! I was worried about shocking it with the 1/3rd rule, but a few days later, I cut it to 3.5 inches. I plan to keep mowing at this height from now on.
Why did you choose TTTF? I’ve been seeing it a lot lately.

In 7B, it’s a great cool-season grass for me. My neighbor uses it and has had great success surviving through the winters, so he recommended it.
I had a similar experience. Were you actually able to get a slit seeder? Mine was advertised as a slit seeder, but it was really a dethatcher with a seed box attachment. It kicked up a lot of thatch, but my understanding was the seed would go under the thatch, so I didn’t bother picking it up. The results weren’t as good as yours…most of the thatch decomposed, but there are some areas where it got matted down.
@Jonas
Yep, I was able to rent it from an Ace Hardware store. It cut grooves in the soil, but I found that the seed dropper really didn’t work well. So I actually seeded first and then used the slit seeder. After cleanup, I fertilized and limed.
@Whitney
Yep, that was my lesson learned. Broadcasting the seeds beforehand is the way to go.
