Odd Holes and Turned Up Dirt in Yard

Hey everyone, new homeowner here. Today I noticed a few spots in the yard where the dirt and brush have been disturbed, almost like something burrowed in and out a few times, all clustered near each other.

Any idea what might be causing this and what I should do about it?

For context, I’m in the PNW. The yard isn’t a typical grass lawn—it’s more of an overgrown mix of dirt, moss, and large pine trees.

Or skunks! No one has mentioned skunks yet.

Bad news: you have a truffle pig infestation. Good news: you have truffles. Just kidding! Actually, it looks like armadillos to me. I know they eat grubs, and I’ve gotten rid of them by just killing the grubs.

That’s wild because it looks exactly like what armadillos did to my yard. Wrecked it, the way they flip and get under the sod looks exactly the same.

@Sidney
Armadillos are really only a thing in a pretty small section of the country. They dig up the ground in ways that are very similar to raccoons and skunks.

The answers so far are making me not feel stupid for asking…literally every animal being mentioned. Squirrels are definitely prevalent on the property. Haven’t seen anything else mentioned here roaming around, but they are possibilities I guess.

@Freddie
Bit of a shit show, ain’t it? :joy:

To me, it looks like this is a tunneling critter AND separately a non-tunneling critter came from above and exposed the tunnels.

So, moles tunneling and skunks or raccoons exposed the tunnels. Not squirrels or any of the other things except maybe possums.

My guess is squirrels.

Possums, around here, anyway. And they can be destructive - they dug under my house and tore up the HVAC.
