I recently purchased a fixer-upper that I’ve been working on, but the lawn is in pretty rough shape. I’ve been mowing regularly, but now that it’s winter, the grass barely grows. During the summer, I wasn’t even sure if it was actual grass or mostly crabgrass (I’m in South Florida). Now, with the cooler months, there’s a variety of other weeds popping up. Does anyone have any recommendations for getting this lawn back in shape?
Nothing is beyond repair; it just depends on how much work you’re willing to put in!

I probably should have mentioned that I have no experience with lawn care since I grew up in apartments.
Start with a broad-spectrum product like Image and then focus on specific weeds.
Since you have no experience or equipment, it might be best to hire a professional at the beginning of the growing season. They can help fix it up during the summer until fall. You could spend the same amount of money trying to do it yourself by buying a good sprayer, spreader, fertilizer, insecticides, and herbicides. After they get it in decent shape, you can take over. Use the time until then to gather equipment and learn more.
It looks like your base grass is St. Augustine, but it has died in some spots because of drought and chinch bugs. In those areas, native wild grasses have taken over.

Oh wow, so what I thought was crabgrass is actually St. Augustine grass? Those thick blades? Is that what I should be planting?
Consider hiring a lawn care professional, or if you have some time, you could weed and fertilize the lawn yourself.
Nothing that some glyphosate, a topsoil/compost mix, grass seed, and water can’t solve!
